Whirlwind

Well let's just say that the first 16 days of school have been a whirlwind!! We have already made it up to 23 friends! We have been working a lot on procedures and classroom rules and how to behave correctly in school! I can't believe it is already over half way through September! This week we have been doing many activities from the great book, "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!" We have read the story multiple times, and even watched a video of it being read to us. We got to do lettering finding on coconut trees, complete a coconut counting book, decorate letters to go in the hallway, and even make our own coconut trees with our names on them!

Insects

Our last unit of the year is Insects! We got to start out this unit with a very special project, caterpillars! In the mail received a very special container that contained 6 caterpillars. To be honest, I am completed disgusted by this stuff, so I am very thankful I have Gina here to help me out! Within about a week all 6 caterpillars had built their cocoons. At that time, we got to transfer them from the jar, to the butterfly cage. Hopefully within another week or so they will hatch out!

We also used pattern blocks to create our own insects. They turned out so cute!

Grass Heads

During our unit on plants, each child got to plant a grass head, and boy have they grown!! Look at how long our hair has gotten!

Jamison also brought in a root farm for us to plant as a class. We have planted onions, carrots, and radishes. We have sprouts from all three so far, but the radishes are growing like crazy!

Plants

This week we started our big Plant Unit. We started off the week talking about living vs. non-living things, and then moved into the parts of plants, and the function that each part has.

We did a celery experiment to show how stems carry water and nutrients around the plant. We colored the water with food coloring to see how it traveled around in the celery stalk. The kids were amazed to see color going up the celery and even in the leaves at the top!

We even used plants in our Math by making some math flowers using our teen numbers!

We got to dig in to some of our favorite fruits to see how many seeds that and what they looked like. We found out that oranges don't always have seeds in them! :( But we still had fun looking!

Special Guest

Yesterday, we were very lucky to have a special guest in our classroom. A storyteller from Norway, Stina Fagertun!! She is a family friend of one of our students, and asked if she could come into our classroom, and of couse I said Yes! She tells stories at the Norsk Hostfest in the fall, and has won many awards back in her home country. She travels all around sharing her craft! She explained to the students where she came from and what her hometown was like. She then shared with us one of her very own fairytales! After, she explained her clothing and some other tradition pieces she had brought with her. The kids loved it!! It was such a great way to introduce some new culture into the classroom!

A little umbrella fun

This week we talked about the Letter U, so of course we had to have a little fun with umbrellas!! We got to decorate our own umbrellas using watercolors. But the best part is the pictures that we added to them!! How cute did they turn out!

We also did some writing about about we would keep under our umbrellas if it was raining out. They did an awesome job!

Easter Eggs

Yesterday we had a blast decorating some Easter eggs to hang in the hall! We first drew our designs and the used a glue bottle to trace our designs to create barriers between our different sections. We didn't paint with regular paint, but we used Karo Syrup instead!! It was definitely sticky but it was so much fun! What a great sensory activity! Some students liked getting down and dirty more than others, but everyone enjoyed it! They turned out great in the end!
